It’s rare that Woodruff’s defense, not the offense, would be responsible for a victory.

But that’s something Wolverines coach Brian Lane doesn’t mind.

Woodruff and its undefeated season were on the ropes until Kenny Drummond stripped a Tigers ball carrier and took the ball 98 yards for a touchdown to put the Wolverines up for good last week. Woodruff went on to win 15-7 and improve to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in Region II-2A.

The Wolverines had averaged 49.4 points per game going into the game, but Lane said the defense stepped up when the team needed it most.

“It’s always good when your defense comes through for you,” he said. “When you win, you want it to be because of your defense. We respectfully call them the ‘Legion of Doom,’ and they come out and try to play hard in each game. They give it all they’ve got week in and week out and came up big Friday.”

Drummond has 51 total tackles with two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, four interceptions and five pass break ups.

Despite the first-team defense only giving up 8 points per game, Drummond said it doesn’t mind being overshadowed by the offense.

“We’re counted on a lot to make plays,” he said. “We just go out and do our jobs and don’t worry too much about anything else.”

Drummond did admit, though, it was nice for the defense to put the ball in the end zone and win a game. The Wolverines trailed 7-6 at the time of the fumble recovery.

“I think it broke (Saluda’s) back a little bit,” he said.

Woodruff will travel to Mid-Carolina for a tough region contest on Friday. The Rebels are 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the region and averaging 39.1 points per game.

Lane said his defense will be challenged once again and must be ready to play.

“Mid-Carolina has been scoring points and doing a good job this year,” he said. “I know our guys won’t take them for granted.”

Tae Mack, who recorded 17 total tackles with four for loss and a sack against Saluda, said the Wolverines will be focused and try to keep their hopes for another region title and hopefully state championship alive.

“Their style of play is tough,” he said of the Rebels. “They like to run the ball, and we’ll have to stay at home and not bite on things. We’re all a team, whether on offense or defense. We’ve all gotten better and hope to keep it up.”

Woodruff's Ryan Perkins Slings It Around

The Woodruff Wolverines have one of the state's most lethal offenses regardless of classification and their quarterback Ryan Perkins has the skills to play on the next level.
WOODRUFF — Several penalties and altercations finally led to Woodruff's scrimmage against Boiling Springs being called with 17 seconds remaining in the two-quarter contest during the Arthur State Bank Wolverine Jamboree on Thursday night at W.L. Varner Stadium.

The Bulldogs picked up a 14-9 victory, but the game was overshadowed by the exchanging of words between the team's players and coaches due to three separate incidents.

The first incident came on a late hit out of bounds on the Boiling Springs' sideline, which caused players from both teams to begin a pushing and shoving match. The next incident came on the field as a result of a penalty.

The last incident came on a Boiling Springs' punt with less than 30 seconds to go in the contest on a penalty away from the play, which led to punches being thrown. Woodruff athletic director Scott Lawson then entered the field and stopped the game. Players and coaches from both teams exchanged words briefly afterward prior to order being restored.

“You've been banging against each other all summer, and it was the first time we were banging on someone else,” Woodruff coach Brian Lane said. “Sometimes emotions take over, and I'm glad our guys kept their composure and got off the field without getting hurt.”

Boiling Springs coach Bruce Clark also added the incidents were unfortunate.

As for the game, Boiling Springs took a 6-0 lead with 7:52 in the second quarter on a 23-yard touchdown run by Tyrecous Garrett. Woodruff got on the board by recording a safety, but the Bulldogs extended the lead to 14-2 on a 14-yard run by Brendon Miller. He also followed with a run for the two-point conversion.

Woodruff cut the deficit to 14-9 with 1:58 left on a 7-yard pass from Ryan Perkins to Hermundre Rutledge, but was unable to complete a potential game-winning drive due to the game being called.

Laurens 12, Chapman 10

Dusty Palmer connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass to Alex Mills with 1.7 seconds remaining to rally the Raiders for the victory.

Chapman took an early 7-0 lead after D.J. Lynch returned a punt to the Laurens' 23-yard line. He scored on the next play on a pass from Josh Henderson.

Following a Laurens' touchdown, Ben Ziegler set up a 33-yard Carlos Villanueva field goal after returning an interception to the Raiders' 3 to increase the Panthers' advantage to 10-6.

“We did some good things tonight,” Chapman coach Kevin Farmer said. “We made some mistakes, but they are correctable.”

Clinton 6, Chesnee 0

Anthony Henley's 6-yard touchdown run with 9:52 left in the second quarter was all the Red Devils needed to pull off the win.

Chesnee reached Clinton territory late in the quarter, but a 53-yard field goal attempt by Panayiotis Kargiatlis fell two yards short of the mark.

“Defensively we played good. You can't ask for much more against a great team like Clinton,” Chesnee coach Brent Bridges said. “We stopped the run well, and just had a couple of breakdowns. Offensively, I'm very disappointed. We didn't get anything going and didn't get in a rhythm.”

“I hate that it happened and agree with coach Lane,” he said. “It was our first time going up against someone with different colored jerseys. It was just two good football teams facing each other. There's no place for that kind of stuff in high school football, and if we're in the wrong, we'll make the corrections.”

Javarius Leamon Commits to Clemson

Congrats to Javarius Leamon on his commitment to Clemson University!

Woodruff
routed previously unbeaten No. 5 Mid-Carolina 42-7 to clinch its third
straight region crown at W.L. Varner Stadium. The Wolverines have won
four of the past five region titles.

“We
are just blessed to come out with a win tonight,” Woodruff coach Brian
Lane said. “This is great for the Woodruff community. I'm in a situation
where people expect to win, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.”

Ryan
Perkins connected with B.J. Johnson for a 48-yard score on Woodruff's
first possession. The Wolverines (6-3, 4-0) scored touchdowns on three
of their four first-half possessions.

Shun
Tribble had a 30-yard touchdown run, and then Hermundre Rutledge had a
41-yard TD scamper to round out the scoring in the first half for the
Wolverines.

“This is the
icing on the cake,” said Perkins, who celebrated his 17th birthday on
Friday. “Nobody believed in us (at the beginning of the year), so this
is great. We knew we needed to come out here and jump on them early.”

Perkins
hooked up with Johnson again on the first play of the second half for
an 80-yard score. Johnson added a 38-yard touchdown pass from Perkins
with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.

“Our
offensive line just did a heck of a job tonight,” Lane said. “We knew
playing a team like Mid-Carolina we needed to put as many points on the
board as we could, because they are explosive.”

Perkins, a junior, was 15-of-20 for 294 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson had 12 catches for 270 yards and three scores.
“We knew if we came out here and executed tonight, we couldn't be stopped,” said Johnson, a senior. “And we knew we had to come out swinging in the second half. It feels real good to win this my last year.”
Rutledge got his second touchdown on the night on a 44-yard run in the third quarter. Rutledge had four rushes for 119 yards.
“It felt good to be able to do my part, but this was a team effort,” said Rutledge, a sophomore. “We were ready tonight from the beginning.”
Nick Sims-Metts scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter for Mid-Carolina (8-1, 3-1).

Any questions surrounding the Woodruff offense were answered in Week 3 of this season.

The Wolverines entered the year with a new quarterback in Ryan Perkins — all-time leading passer Jake Lambert graduated — and several new starters on the offensive line.

But Perkins and the rest of the offense didn’t give Wolverines fans long to reminisce about last year’s group, which averaged 43 points per game.

After dropping its first two games, Woodruff exploded for an impressive 42-22 win at then-unbeaten Chesnee.

Since the victory, the Wolverines are averaging 45.5 points and are 3-1 over a four-game stretch.

Woodruff is 4-3 overall and 2-0 in Region II-2A heading into Friday night’s 7:30 contest at Saluda.

Perkins, who has completed 109 of 198 passes for 1,607 yards and 15 touchdowns this year, said the offense has gotten better each week.

“When the season started, we were working hard but have just gotten better,” he said. “The offense is really clicking right now.”
Perkins said the success is due to the offensive line and running back Shun Tribble, who has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark with 144 carries for 1,038 yards and 13 touchdowns.

“First and foremost, the offensive line playing well allows us to run the ball and to pass the ball,” he said. “They have played very well and doing a good job.”

Tribble said the team has to continue executing, though, if it is to pull out a third straight region win against the Tigers, who are 1-6 overall.

“We’re focused on taking one game at a time and concentrating on Saluda,” he said. “We aren’t looking ahead and have a good coaching staff that helps us believe in ourselves.”

Perkins said that focusing as a team and not on individual success is what has led to results on the field.

“I’m just glad we’re winning games,” he said. “I’m not worried about getting 1,000 yards. I just get the ball to my playmakers. They get all the yards for me.”

“Our offensive line has gotten much better,” Perkins said. “Shun can run for 20 yards every time he touches the ball.”

Tribble echoed his quarterback’s sentiments.

“The offensive line has gelled and faster than anyone probably thought,” he said. “They have really helped me become a lot better.”
Woodruff coach Brian Lane said making plays starts up front for his team.

WOODRUFF — Woodruff shook off a slow start with a big second quarter en route to a 38-0 win against Newberry Friday night at W.L. Varner Stadium.

The Wolverines improve to 4-3, 2-0 in Region III-2A. The Bulldogs fall to 2-5, 1-1.

Woodruff junior running back Shun Tribble entered the game 56 yards shy of 1,000 for the season. With 1:44 left in the first quarter, Tribble ripped off a 14-yard run to the Bulldogs 28 to set up Ryan Perkins' 28-yard touchdown pass to Hermundre Rutledge, making it 7-0 Wolverines.

Tribble finished the night with 94 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. He now has 1,041 yards in seven games.

“Shun is doing a tremendous job,” said Woodruff coach Brian Lane. “I am really proud of his leadership.”

Woodruff outscored Newberry 24-0 in the second quarter, capitalizing on every Bulldogs miscue. Senior defensive tackle Bryan McCall recovered quarterback Shavis Sims' fumble at Newberry's 20. On the next play, Perkins tossed a screen pass to senior wide receiver B.J. Johnson, who scampered 20 yards for a touchdown.

Johnson had three receptions for 52 yards. Perkins was 10-for-25 for 157 yards three touchdowns.

Perkins went over the 1,000-yard milestone passing for the season, but deflected the attention to his teammates.

“I wasn't aware I did that,” Perkins said. “I give all the credit to my receivers and offensive line. I just get the ball to the play-makers.”

The Bulldogs continued to make it easy for the Wolverines, giving up two safeties as well.

The play of the game was delivered by Woodruff freshman wide receiver Blake Bone in the second quarter. Bone out-leaped a defender, tipped the ball and hauled in a 7-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone for a 22-0 Woodruff lead.

While the Wolverines have outscored opponents 88-8 in their past two games, Lane was most proud of the defense holding the Bulldogs to just 132 totals yards on 68 plays.

“Defensively we played great ball,“ said Lane. “We hurt them when they made mistakes. But we still have work to do to get better.”

WOODRUFF — Woodruff knew what its offense was capable of coming into Friday night's Region II-2A opener against Emerald. But the defense still felt like it had something to prove.

The Wolverines responded by shutting down the Vikings en route to a 50-8 victory at W.L. Varner Stadium.

Woodruff (4-2, 1-0) pitched a shutout defensively and forced five Emerald turnovers to cruise to the win. The Vikings' only points came on a 40-yard interception return for a score by Anthony Kelly in the first quarter.

“The defense was the shining point,” Woodruff coach Brian Lane said. “They stepped it up.”

The Wolverines picked off four passes on the night, with one coming on a fourth-and-6 by Cyd Wedman as Emerald tried to catch them off guard on a halfback pass. David Parks, Brandon Rice and D.J. Jones also recorded interceptions for Woodruff.

Jones returned his interception 108 yards for a touchdown, but it was negated by a block in the back penalty.

“When you run from the back of the end zone all the way and it doesn't count, it's devastating,” Jones said. “But we got the ball and the win, so I'm happy.”

Woodruff was led offensively by running back Shun Tribble, who rushed 16 times for 211 yards and five touchdowns.

Tribble scored on runs of 3, 15, 2, 40 and 47 yards to lead the Wolverines.

“Our offensive line is getting better every week,” Tribble said. “We've just been studying film and know what to do. The line opens holes, and I just run through.”

“That kid is doing a great job when he gets his hands on the ball,” Lane said. “The offensive line has grown and is doing a great job opening holes for us.”

B.J. Johnson scored on a 13-yard pass from Ryan Perkins in the first quarter for Woodruff. The Wolverines capped their scoring on a 22-yard pass from Ben Beck to Blake Bone in the fourth quarter.

Woodruff finishes on top in shootout with Chapman

WOODRUFF — Perhaps no one was busier Friday night than the scoreboard operator at W.L. Varner Stadium.

Quarterback Ryan Perkins led the Woodruff attack by completing 19 of 29 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns, while running back Shun Tribble had 31 carries for 218 yards and three touchdowns.
"Anytime you're playing a quality team like Chapman, you know they're going to put up points, so we had to score all we could," Wolverines head coach Brian Lane said. "I'm just glad we came out on top."
Woodruff led 10-0 after the first quarter, but the Panthers scored two touchdowns in less than a minute to take their only lead of the night.
The Wolverines (2-2) responded with 26 unanswered points, taking a 36-13 lead before two more lightning-fast Chapman strikes.
At halftime, the score was 36-28.
"We just kept doing what we could to score," said Perkins, who had compiled 280 passing yards by halftime.
B.J. Johnson caught touchdown passes of 68 and 19 yards, and Jacob Condra had a 45-yard touchdown reception.
Running back Hermundre Rutledge had a 33-yard catch for a touchdown along with scoring runs of 57 and 9 yards.
"We just battled from start to finish and kept fighting until the end," Tribble said. "The offensive line did a good job opening up the holes, and the receivers did a great job maintaining the blocks downfield."

Panthers quarterback Josh Henderson completed 11 of 28 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Dayton Ayers, who made seven receptions for 224 yards.
Ayers scored on touchdown passes of 61 and 59 yards while setting up another with a 53-yard catch.
Chapman (1-3) scored two defensive touchdowns — a 25-yard interception return by Justin McCollum and a 25-yard fumble return by Kennan Hines, who was penalized for somersaulting into the end zone.
"(Woodruff) has a lot of speed, and they got out in space on us and caused us some problems," Panthers head coach Kevin Farmer said. "But the kids played hard for four quarters. They made a lot of plays, and they kept us in the game."
According to Woodruff's game program, the 64 points were the most scored by the Wolverines since a 78-6 win against Carolina in 2004.

Tribble spells trouble as Woodruff rips Chesnee, 42-22

CHESNEE — The Chesnee defense got a heavy dose of Woodruff junior running back Shun Tribble on Friday night.

Tribble rushed for 203 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Wolverines beat the Eagles 42-22 on the road. Woodruff is now 28-6 in the all-time series, and the Wolverines have won nine straight in the series.

“It’s always great to get your first win, and Chesnee is a great ball club,” Woodruff coach Brian Lane said. “We jumped out on them early, but they came back strong on us and we kind of had to hold on. That was typical Shun Tribble out there tonight.”
Tribble’s first two scores came in the first half on runs of 24 and 7 yards, respectively. He sealed the game late with a 2-yard run for Woodruff (1-2).

“The offensive line did a great job of opening the holes for me,” Tribble said. “This win feels really good, but we can’t get too complacent. We have to keep fighting and working hard.”

Chesnee (2-1) fell behind 35-7 midway through the third quarter. The Eagles cut the lead to 35-22 with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter after a safety.

“We didn’t get the maximum effort out of our guys tonight,” Chesnee coach Brent Bridges said. “I don’t know what it is about Woodruff, but I tried to keep them as loose as I could this week. We’re just going to have to regroup.”

Ryan Perkins was 17-of-25 for 344 yards and threw two touchdown passes for Woodruff. B.J. Johnson and Jacob Condra caught the scores.

Prennis Thompson had a 65-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for Woodruff.

Walt Miller threw three touchdown passes for Chesnee. Two went to DaJohn Rowland and the other to Taylor Wade.
