WOODRUFF — Sophomore running back Ken Drummond and a stout defense kept Woodruff red hot in region on a cold, rainy night as the Wolverines defeated Broome 40-15 on Friday.
Drummond rushed for 241 yards and four touchdowns as Woodruff remained undefeated in the regular season.
The Wolverines (10-0, 5-0 Region III-2A) will head into the playoffs as a top seed and will have a bye next week.
Broome (1-9, 0-5), meanwhile, travels to Keenan Friday for a first-round game.
“This gives us momentum heading into the playoffs,” Woodruff head coach Brian Lane said.
The Wolverines struck with 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a 56-yard touchdown run by Hermundre Rutledge. They added to their lead with 9:10 left in the half when Stacey McMahan caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Perkins.
Drummond scored the first of his rushing touchdowns on a 7-yard run with 55 seconds left in the half.
Broome’s Sam Chesier kicked a 35-yard field goal to get the Centurions on the board with a second left in the half.
The Centurions made a splash out of the gate in the second half when Eli Gist scored on a 98-yard return on the opening kickoff.
Then, Drummond came up strong in the remainder of the half, scoring on runs of 80, 25 and 22 yards.
“He’s electrifying on offense and defense,” Lane said of Drummond. “He’s going to be a good player for us in the future.”
The Wolverine defense constantly squashed any momentum Broome attempted to build, holding the Centurions to 205 yards total offense and forcing four fumbles.
“Our defense has been playing well all region. The guys are doing great,” Lane said.
Broome scored with a little more than a minute left in the game on a 44-yard run by Sacorie Webster.
