In an unusual turn, Woodruff's D is the star

It’s rare that Woodruff’s defense, not the offense, would be responsible for a victory.

But that’s something Wolverines coach Brian Lane doesn’t mind.

Woodruff and its undefeated season were on the ropes until Kenny Drummond stripped a Tigers ball carrier and took the ball 98 yards for a touchdown to put the Wolverines up for good last week. Woodruff went on to win 15-7 and improve to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in Region II-2A.

The Wolverines had averaged 49.4 points per game going into the game, but Lane said the defense stepped up when the team needed it most.

“It’s always good when your defense comes through for you,” he said. “When you win, you want it to be because of your defense. We respectfully call them the ‘Legion of Doom,’ and they come out and try to play hard in each game. They give it all they’ve got week in and week out and came up big Friday.”

Drummond has 51 total tackles with two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, four interceptions and five pass break ups.

Despite the first-team defense only giving up 8 points per game, Drummond said it doesn’t mind being overshadowed by the offense.

“We’re counted on a lot to make plays,” he said. “We just go out and do our jobs and don’t worry too much about anything else.”

Drummond did admit, though, it was nice for the defense to put the ball in the end zone and win a game. The Wolverines trailed 7-6 at the time of the fumble recovery.

“I think it broke (Saluda’s) back a little bit,” he said.

Woodruff will travel to Mid-Carolina for a tough region contest on Friday. The Rebels are 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the region and averaging 39.1 points per game.

Lane said his defense will be challenged once again and must be ready to play.

“Mid-Carolina has been scoring points and doing a good job this year,” he said. “I know our guys won’t take them for granted.”

Tae Mack, who recorded 17 total tackles with four for loss and a sack against Saluda, said the Wolverines will be focused and try to keep their hopes for another region title and hopefully state championship alive.

“Their style of play is tough,” he said of the Rebels. “They like to run the ball, and we’ll have to stay at home and not bite on things. We’re all a team, whether on offense or defense. We’ve all gotten better and hope to keep it up.”
