Wolverines fight off Saluda, stay unbeaten

Ken Drummond has had a knack for making big plays all year for the Woodruff defense, but his biggest to date may have come Friday night against Saluda. With the Wolverines trailing 7-6 early in the fourth quarter and Saluda in position to cushion the lead facing a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Drummond stripped the Tigers' running back and returned the ball 98 yards for a score to give Woodruff its first lead of the game. The Wolverines held on for a 15-7 win.

It was the toughest test of the season for unbeaten Woodruff, which improves to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in Region II-2A. Saluda drops to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in region play.

"I just saw the man and he spun, so I just stripped the ball and took off running. I was about to pass out I was so tired, but I knew I had to score because we were down," Drummond said.

Woodruff coach Brian Lane said the play was just one of the many big plays Drummond has made this year.
"Ken has had a turnover of some sort in every game since Game 3. He's really just been a catalyst on that defense and been playing well for us," Lane said.

Saluda took the lead late in the first quarter when quarterback Walker Noteboom found Devonta Brown from 25 yards out.

Woodruff answered just before the half on a touchdown pass from Ryan Perkins to Hermundre Rutledge, but missed the extra point to make the score 7-6 at the half. After Drummond's fumble return, Taylor Green added a late field goal to provide the final margin.

"Our coaches did a really good job of game-planning. We knew this was going to be a tough, tough matchup and our goal was to come here and play as hard as we could play. That's the hardest we've played for 48 minutes in my three years at Saluda," Tigers' coach Doug Painter said.
