CHESNEE — The Chesnee defense got a heavy dose of Woodruff junior running back Shun Tribble on Friday night.
Tribble rushed for 203 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Wolverines beat the Eagles 42-22 on the road. Woodruff is now 28-6 in the all-time series, and the Wolverines have won nine straight in the series.
“It’s always great to get your first win, and Chesnee is a great ball club,” Woodruff coach Brian Lane said. “We jumped out on them early, but they came back strong on us and we kind of had to hold on. That was typical Shun Tribble out there tonight.”
Tribble’s first two scores came in the first half on runs of 24 and 7 yards, respectively. He sealed the game late with a 2-yard run for Woodruff (1-2).
“The offensive line did a great job of opening the holes for me,” Tribble said. “This win feels really good, but we can’t get too complacent. We have to keep fighting and working hard.”
Chesnee (2-1) fell behind 35-7 midway through the third quarter. The Eagles cut the lead to 35-22 with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter after a safety.
“We didn’t get the maximum effort out of our guys tonight,” Chesnee coach Brent Bridges said. “I don’t know what it is about Woodruff, but I tried to keep them as loose as I could this week. We’re just going to have to regroup.”
Ryan Perkins was 17-of-25 for 344 yards and threw two touchdown passes for Woodruff. B.J. Johnson and Jacob Condra caught the scores.
Prennis Thompson had a 65-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for Woodruff.
Walt Miller threw three touchdown passes for Chesnee. Two went to DaJohn Rowland and the other to Taylor Wade.
