WOODRUFF — Perhaps no one was busier Friday night than the scoreboard operator at W.L. Varner Stadium.
Quarterback Ryan Perkins led the Woodruff attack by completing 19 of 29 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns, while running back Shun Tribble had 31 carries for 218 yards and three touchdowns.
"Anytime you're playing a quality team like Chapman, you know they're going to put up points, so we had to score all we could," Wolverines head coach Brian Lane said. "I'm just glad we came out on top."
Woodruff led 10-0 after the first quarter, but the Panthers scored two touchdowns in less than a minute to take their only lead of the night.
The Wolverines (2-2) responded with 26 unanswered points, taking a 36-13 lead before two more lightning-fast Chapman strikes.
At halftime, the score was 36-28.
"We just kept doing what we could to score," said Perkins, who had compiled 280 passing yards by halftime.
B.J. Johnson caught touchdown passes of 68 and 19 yards, and Jacob Condra had a 45-yard touchdown reception.
Running back Hermundre Rutledge had a 33-yard catch for a touchdown along with scoring runs of 57 and 9 yards.
"We just battled from start to finish and kept fighting until the end," Tribble said. "The offensive line did a good job opening up the holes, and the receivers did a great job maintaining the blocks downfield."
Panthers quarterback Josh Henderson completed 11 of 28 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Dayton Ayers, who made seven receptions for 224 yards.
Ayers scored on touchdown passes of 61 and 59 yards while setting up another with a 53-yard catch.
Chapman (1-3) scored two defensive touchdowns — a 25-yard interception return by Justin McCollum and a 25-yard fumble return by Kennan Hines, who was penalized for somersaulting into the end zone.
"(Woodruff) has a lot of speed, and they got out in space on us and caused us some problems," Panthers head coach Kevin Farmer said. "But the kids played hard for four quarters. They made a lot of plays, and they kept us in the game."
According to Woodruff's game program, the 64 points were the most scored by the Wolverines since a 78-6 win against Carolina in 2004.
